About the Trek
Mawryngkhang Trek is also known as Bamboo Trek because the trek is made up of Bamboo.
The starting point of the trail is Wahkhen Village. Vehicles can be parked in the village before starting the trek. Parking charges for bikes are Rs. 20 and cars are Rs. 50 (subject to change from time and place). You will also find small stalls to eat basic food like packed noodles, omelets, and packaged drinking water.
From the start of the trek, you will reach Wahrew River in 0.05 km, followed by Mawkhlieng Cliff in 1.25 km, Mawmoit Point in 1.57 km, and Mawryngkhang in 1.77 km.
The fee for the Mawryngkhang Trek is Rs. 100 per person (subject to change from the time). Each person is supposed to register at the gate before starting trekking. The trek timing is 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
When you reach the river, you will find a low-flowing stream. Suggest you cross the river from the bamboo bridge to avoid drenching your shoes which eventually will make them wet, and you will face difficulties while climbing the trek. You may enjoy the water while coming back.
On the way, you will find a diversion to Wahrew Waterfalls; the entry charge is Rs. 50 per adult and Rs. 30 per child. Suggest you visit while returning.
The most exciting part of the trail is that you dare walk over a trench with the support of just Bamboo. You can watch the beautiful valley around and below you. If you are acrophobic and want to fight your fears, think it through before you take this trail.
Follow all the rules mentioned on the signboards while hiking; it is only for your safety. There are patches where suspension bridges between cliffs are made of Bamboo without support at the bottom; check the maximum person allowed on the bridge before stepping forward.
The Legends of Mawryngkhang
As per the local Khasis', there was a battle of stones where the winner was a mighty stone named Mawryngkhang, who became the king of stones. Eventually, he fell in love with another stone called Kthiang from a neighboring kingdom. Another powerful stone, Mawpator, also had his eyes on Kthiang. As a result, there was a vicious battle between Mawryngkhang and Mawpator. Both fought to their strength, and Mawpator sliced Mawryngkhang's hand. Lionhearted Mawryngkhang never gave up, and he beheaded Mawpator to defeat him. The final point of the trail is Mawryngkhang, who is still standing there with Kthiang behind him. The Head of Mawpator still lies below him.
